8 Currently Airing Dramas You Need to Check Out
In this digitally inclined day and age, viewers essentially have an all-you-can-eat 24-7 buffet of dramas to pick from. This can be freeing, but this can also render you paralyzed in a state of helpless indecision. What to watch? One wrong decision could lead to hours down the drain (because of course now that you’re 10 episodes deep into a 20-episode show, you are not going to stop, because come on, what a waste!), as well as a conviction that you have just been cheated by the drama gods (the drama ended how??). As Spiderman so wisely said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” I have decided to take on this momentous task, and curate for you, dear readers, a selection of currently airing dramas. What do you think?
I once got my fortune told for five dollars. It… was not not accurate. “Madame Antoine” K-drama about psychic Go Hye Rim (Han Ye Seul), aka Madame Antoine, called that for her ability to ~communicate~ with Marie Antoinette. In reality, her psychic-ness is actually a Sherlock-style attention to detail. The shop above her suddenly gains a new resident, psychotherapist Choi Soo Hyun (), who opens up an experimental clinic. Choi Soo Hyun very much does not believe in true love and his experiments aim to prove it; he sends men in to fake-woo women (suspend all knowledge and belief in professional morals and ethics, they only get in the way). His cynical view of the world is what keeps me watching, because I can’t stop waiting for him to get his comeuppance. I can’t wait for him to be proven wrong!
“Moorim School” is a drama set in a school à la Hogwarts. These days it’s hard to do anything to do with magic well without overly relying on CGI, especially on television, but I’m a fan of “Moorim School”! Idol Yoon Shi Woo () and Chinese company heir Wang Chi Ang (Lee Hong Bin) are both sent to Moorim for their own reasons. There, they learn to fend for themselves in a world outside of anything they had ever known. I have to say though, my favorite character is definitely Shim Soon Duk () She’s just so funny! Who is your favorite?
Technically “Marry me, or Not?” just finished, but since I am not quite through the entire series, I think it deserves a mention on this list. This Taiwanese drama first came to my attention for a more… salacious reason. There is an incredibly steamy kiss scene…. This drama is about driven travel agent Cai Huan Zhe (Alice Ke), who is just trying to find love, and jaded divorce lawyer Hao Meng (), who is scarred by his forever feuding parents. The chemistry between the two is palpable, and just adds to the wittiness factor. For readers looking for a light romcom, this one’s for you!
If you haven’t tried “One More Happy Ending” yet, I have just one word for you. CONAN. Yes, that’s right, Conan O’Brian makes an absolutely hilarious cameo (episodes 9 and 10) in it! This K-drama revolves around members of former female idol group “Angels” Han Mi Mo (), Baek Da Jung (Yoo Da In), Go Dong Mi (Yoo In Na), and Hong Ae Ran (). Han Mi Mo and Baek Da Jung open a marriage agency for divorcées, while Go Dong Mi is a lonely school teacher, and Hong Ae Ran works for an internet shopping mall. Poor Han Mi Mo gets stuck in a love triangle with single father Song Soo Hyuk (Jung Kyung Ho), and his friend, Goo Hae Joon (Kwon Yool). I find Jang Nara sooo cute and am just waiting for her to get her happy ending!
Based on a webtoon, Korean drama “” has become hugely popular, and for good reason. College student Hong Seol (Kim Go Eun) is just trying to make it through school intact. She crosses path with returning student Yoo Jung (Park Hae Jin), who really puts out the silent and mysterious vibe, and it all kind of goes sideways. Yoo Jung seems perfect, but he clearly has some deep dark past-what is it? I just started it, so NO SPOILERS PLEASE. Also, can I just say that Park Hae Jin is SO CUTE (yes, I know most everyone else finds him a bit creepy, but different strokes for different folks, okay??), but let’s admit it, he looks real old for a “college student.” For those who are deep into that “Cheese in the Trap” hole, how about an opportunity to win a poster signed by the entire cast (yessss)?
and ? Sign me up! Ever since I saw the gorgeous stills for “The Imperial Doctress,” I’ve been waiting with bated breath, and now it’s finally hereeeee. A C-drama that revolves around a disgraced family of imperial physicians who were banned from practicing medicine ever again, with Liu Shi Shi as the youngest daughter. She secretly learns medicine from her grandmother and then works her way up to become the first female imperial doctor in the Ming dynasty! Now that’s a role model. Besides the awesome female empowerment angle, there is also a super angsty love triangle between her and two emperors! Who are brothers! How is this possible? Watch and find out.
I love wuxia (martial arts) dramas! So when I saw that “” would be starring Kevin Yan, he of the handsome chiseled face, I was beyond excited. He plays expert swordsman Zhan Zhao, who saves the life of Justice Bao Zhen with some smooth moves (and of course, CGI), and then gets swept up into court politics. Dubbed the “Imperial Cat” by the emperor, he goes on to team up with the Five Mice of Hollow Island to work against evil forces in court, or as I like to put it, a game of cat and mice commences (yea, I went there). Overall, I’m really enjoying this- it reminds me a bit of the old-style historical detective dramas I used to watch as a child. Does anyone else get that feeling?
Ahhhh, ““! I’m not ashamed to admit that I binge watched 10 episodes of this Taiwanese drama. On a weeknight. With things to do the next day (it was that addicting). Pi Ya Nuo (Megan Lai), because of a fortune teller’s prediction, has to live her first 25 years as a boy, or be doomed to die. As her 26th birthday nears, “he” gets mixed up with Du Zi Feng (), becomes his “sworn brother” and then it all goes to hell in a handbasket! The amount of skinship between the two of them is so crazy ridiculous, I have to cover my face sometimes, but at the same time, I just can’t stop watching. For those who are a fan of the incredibly cute , he also has his own secondary love story!
