Here’s Everything We Know About The New NCT 2020 Members, Shotaro & Sungchan
It’s only been a few days since SM Entertainment announced that two new members would be joining NCT for their NCT 2020 mega-project, but fans are already falling for the charming rookies. Here’s everything we know about new members Shotaro and Sungchan so far.
Shotaro (full name Osaki Shotaro) was born on November 25, 2000 in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa, Kantō. At 19 years old (21 under the Korean age system), he’s the fourth youngest NCT member overall.
Shotaro’s hobbies include basketball and watching mukbang videos, and he considers dance his specialty. As such, fans are suspecting he may debut in the group’s dance line.
His favorite foods are two of the most popular in Japan—sushi and dango, a type of mochi-like dumpling.
Shotaro described his personality as soft and revealed that his most charming point is his eye smile.
Before Shotaro made it to NCT, he was an avid user of TikTok. He uploaded numerous dance videos to his account, @shotaro_osaki, including one where he danced to NCT 127‘s “Kick It”.

Since his TikTok account was only closed recently, some NCTzens suspect he was recruited to SM Entertainment just a few months ago.
Meanwhile, Sungchan (full name Jung Sungchan) was born on September 13, 2001 in Seoul, South Korea. At 19 years old (20 under the Korean age system), he’s the third youngest NCT member overall.
Sungchan seems to be athletic because he named exercising and soccer as two of his biggest hobbies. He also loves playing games and watching animal videos. Writing raps is his special skill, so fans think he might debut in the group’s rap line.
Like Shotaro, Sungchan loves Japanese food. Along with sushi, he’s also a fan of sashimi (sliced raw fish and meat).
Sungchan has more of a clumsy and forgetful personality, and his charming points are his height, eyes, and quirks.
So far, fans haven’t uncovered any information about Sungchan’s predebut life. In a Dear U message to fans, YangYang revealed he’s known Sungchan since his trainee days, so it’s likely he’s been with SM Entertainment for quite some time.
As of right now, two theories about the new members’ futures are prevailing. Some fans believe Shotaro and Sungchan may join NCT Dream due to their young age. However, after SM Entertainment announced in April that NCT Dream would not have any more “graduations”, many believe the unit’s lineup is now fixed.
Alternatively, several NCTzens have suggested that Shotaro and Sungchan will be part of a new unit with other existing members of the group, though no one is quite sure what concept to expect.
Whatever happens in the future, while some fans were initially skeptical about the addition of new members to NCT 2020, global NCTzens seem to be welcoming them with open arms. The 23-member project group is set to debut on October 12 with NCT 2020: RESONANCE Pt. 1.
